Thanks, Albert. So if I got this right, there is just some sort of pointer in file 2 showing where the rtf is in file 4. If I get data corruption in file 2 like a broken row pointer, and fix it with rscope, that RTF data may not be been affected at all. If that is the case, I am one happy guy. We never had this functonality before v7. I am just so very wary of note fields after being burnt alive with bad backups.

If you use a VARCHAR data type for this field, the contents are stored in file 4. I recently
converted a data file with more than one NOTE filed to use VARCHAR instead, because the row
lengths were being exceeded. They have worked well. The users access them from within a DBGrid,
and they edit easily with a mouse click. The "icon" that displays in the DBGrid shows whether or
not there is any data in the field. My users like it.
