Eureka!

HKey_Current_User\Software\R:Base Technologies\RBG7\Data Dictionary

had a value for "Top" of "ffffc6a0" = 4294952608

I changed it to 100 hoping that it represented pixels - my screen is not that big <g> and now I can see the DD again.

Thanks to everybody for your help,
Regards,
Alastair.

Thanks Doug - no, unfortunately the DD is not shown as a separate task.

However, I presume that R:Base stores the last size & position somewhere so I am about to search the registry and then any ini files that I can find to see if I can find something to "correct".

I'm not convinced that somehow it has got "off-screen" but it is the only possibility that I've got to go on at the moment so any other help/suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Alastair.

Alastair, if you bring up the task list with Ctrl-Alt-Del, is the RB DD listed?  If it is, try right-clicking on
it and see what options there are.  I'm not at a W98 machine right now but Win2K has minimize, maximize, bring to front &
some other options.  Maybe if the DD is off-screen this will help you locate it.
If the RB DD isn't listed, well, then I'll check some old W98 ref material and see what else might help.

Doug

Thanks Albert, & Javier, but I don't think your suggestions are the answer -
even though I have tried them.

What has just crossed my mind after all but re-installing W98SE is that I
had a problem about a week ago when another program somehow got minimised
and moved outside the normal screen area.

I managed to retrieve it by using the re-size option when it showed on the
toolbar. Don't ask how it's possible but I could minimise and restore the
program but not maximise it - something like that.

If the Data dictionary was open at that same time it is possible that it is
being displayed but not where I can see it. That also seems to tie in with
[Esc] working to return control to R:Base.

However, the DD doesn't show on the toolbar so does anybody have any
suggestions how I could see if this is what's happening and/or do anything
about it?

Again, thanks for all the suggestions,
Regards,
Alastair.

Another thought, Alastair - have a look for spurious RBE* files. Move

everything into the program

directory and start R:Base with the -a switch to make sure it uses the

correct ones.

Over the last few days, maybe a week, whenever I press [F3] to display

the data dictionary the

screen flashes the dictionary briefly then appears to "hang". Pressing

[Esc] clears the "hang".

It happens with all databases.

I've tried reloading the databases as well as re-installing my last

upgrade but neither resolves

the problem.

I have also checked for any redefined keys but as the data dictionary

does start I presume that

is not the cause - and I couldn't find any changes anyway.

Obviously, as this has been working forever, something must have changed

on my system but does

anybody have any ideas what else I could look for, please?

Thanks in advance & regards,
Alastair.
