Tested Lycos with the following results:

gives 103,500 hits;
launch
'http://search.lycos.com/default.asp?loc=searchbox&tab=web&query=Alerter
Service'
gives 190 hits;
launch
'http://search.lycos.com/default.asp?loc=searchbox&tab=web&query="Alerter+Service";'
gives 190 hits;
Tested AskJeeves with the following results:
launch 'http://web.ask.com/web?q=alerter+service' gives 23,100 hits;
launch 'http://web.ask.com/web?q="Alerter Service"' gives 103,500 hits;
launch 'http://web.ask.com/web?q="Alerter+Service";' gives 23,100 hits;
I also found a way to Kartoo:
launch 'http://www.kartoo.com/uk/servlet/H?q=Alerter+Service' gives
about 500,000 hits but
without the mapping, just a resultlist;
launch 'http://www.kartoo.com/uk/servlet/H?q=%22Alerter+Service%22'
gives 27,420 hits in
the result list.
Since the point with Kartoo is the mapping service the above is not good
enough so I kept
digging and came up with this:
launch 'http://www.kartoo.com/flash04.php3?q=%22Alerter+Service%22'
which gives me the mapping of the resultlist.
To put it mildly: The degree of standardisation in the world of search
engines
appears to be not very high.
