http://www.efgh.com/bike/routes.htm provides some really great
information on routes in the San Diego area mapped out by Philip
Erdelsky. Philip and I serve together on the board of the San Diego
County Bicycle Coalition ( http://www.sdcbc.org ). He retired early
so he could devote as much of his life to cycling as possible. He
has ridden all of these routes and knows the county very
well. Unfortunately (for him) he is not rivish.

SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments) puts out an excellent
bike map showing all area bike routes, bike paths, and streets with
bike lanes. It is PDF so you can drill down for good detail. It is
available on line at
http://www.ridelink.org/CommuterChoices/Bike_Maps.aspx . It is also
available in printed form but that does not have sufficient detail to
serve as anything but an overall guide.

If those of you who want to travel south by train are interested in a
ride of about 60 miles, you could travel south along the coast from
Oceanside to the Fairbanks Ranch area and then go inland through some
pretty country to the I 15 corridor then south to the downtown area
where the return train ride could leave from the historic Santa Fe station.

There are endless possibilities.
