That's my experience as well.  I use 50mm Berthouds on my Saluki with
Col de la Vie tires.  BTW - when the group goes through wet spots and
they emerge with bikes covered with muddy water, but I generally come
out of it with only a few muddy drops along the chains stays.   This is
riding on dirt roads, not fire roads or MTB trails.
