Ray: I took the Macbook Air on a trip last fall. I bought a sleeve from Waterfield designs in San Francisco and packed it in the pannier in between changes of clothes. The trip was on paved roads in Massachusetts. The Air did just fine. Not certain I would do the same off road.
The I Phone is getting pretty close to a lap top in capability. A year or so for now carrying even a small lap top may be an extravagence.
