One option to consider would be an XO laptop from One Laptop Per Child. I have one, and they're pretty much indestructible--no moving parts, waterproof keyboard, etc. I haven't taken it touring, but I'm sure it would do fine. The downside to the XO for you (aside from the small keyboard) would be that it's a Linux machine and won't run your programs.
If you're interested, you can find them on eBay, or go to Amazon.com and do the buy-one-give-one program. That's how I bought mine a year ago--the other laptop went to a needy child. --Eric [email protected] www.campyonly.com www.wheelsnorth.org On Jan 14, 2009, at 7:48 AM, PATRICK MOORE wrote: > I can't speak from pesonal experience, but a computer tech who has > given me some very good service bought a similar Dell last year and > highly recommended it to me -- I know that's only a very general > answer, but it might serve to weight one side of the decision scale. > > On Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 7:35 AM, Ray Shine <[email protected]> > wrote: > Yeah, I sure don't want to get that worn old debate going anew, but > I would like to mention and maybe seek comments on a computer/bike > question. > > I recently purchased a small Acer netbook (2 lbs., 6 x 8 inches) to > carry in my pannier on this coming summer's Western Express/Trans-Am > trip.
