Subject: [RBW] Re: shifter opinions
Hi All-
I have ridden both bar end (Campy, Suntour), down tube (Campy, Simplex retro
friction, Suntour) and Campy Ergo. My experience is that for fast group rides I
favor, heavily, the bar-cons. From the drops (which is where I like to be in a
paceline) shifting was easier than with Ergo. I use the heel of my hand to
shift down the cogs and hook the shifter with my little and ring fingers to go
up. My hands never leave the bars, but at the same time they aren't numb
because they shift around. Down tube shifters are my favorite for brevet
riding. Shifts, obviously, require that one or both hands leave the bars which
gives them a break from the normal riding position, preventing numbness. Also,
I like the lack of forward-looping cables that are the bane of bar-end shifters
and a potential problem when I ride with a bar bag. My two cents!
