I have both Silvers shifting Suntour XCD derailleurs over a 7 speed FW, and 8 speed Shimanos. I pretty much leave the Shimanos in index mode, and have no trouble with them. The option to use friction is nice, but I never have to use it.
I'd hate to use friction shifters off road. I need all my attention to stay upright on dirt, I want the shifter to do the work. Same in the middle of a steep climb. I can do it with friction, I cut my cycling chops on Nuovo Record, but I'm happy to take advantage of technology in this instance. Friction can be a little more quiet, but I had a lot of ghost shifting problems running friction shifters and Hyperglide cogs. It's better with an old Sachs FW.
