I technically don't qualify for this list anymore unless we're talking wool and pedals - the Riv gear I use on my recumbents - but I think this topic is general enough for me to opine on.
I think anyone who uses a rechargeable lighting system shouldn't be too shy about electronic shifting. I feel it has its merits in recreational riding, at least on the front. The easiest front shifting I ever had was the friction bar-end on my Romulus. The downside was having to constantly trim the FD because I shifted between the 3 rings a lot in my hilly area. Big deal, right? Well, when compared to the precise click-shifts I was getting in back, it bugged me on long rides. So I switched to Ultegra STI, but the hand/wrist stress it took for my small hands to operate the front shifter eventually agravated an old back injury. Now I have recumbents with Sram grip-shifters. Front and rear both shift precisely, but both take a pretty good grip to operate. Again, this may be a result of my teeny-tiny hands, something many women may relate to. The front in particular sometimes takes a pretty strong grip to rotate if my hands are ensconced in Riv's thick gloves. Point being, if I could put a shifting system on my bikes that was as reliable as a Niterider light and would give me clean shifts without a lot of hand pressure, I would consider it. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
