Zack, I agree with Jim.  8 sp is great.  And you don't have to lose
any gear range compared to 9 sp...  I run 12-32 on an XT 8 sp cassette
with Ultegra bar end shifters on Thumbies (on the bar tops).  Shifts
extremely well with friction; lower effort and nearly silent.  (When I
keep the chain clean and lubed.)  If a little friction trim is
necessary after my initial "shift" then the controls on the bar tops
make it really easy (usually just a nudge with the side of my right
hand/thumb/index finger does it).

I have some Silver Shifters but haven't decided if/where I'll install
them yet.  I bet the SS will be more enjoyable in some tactile way but
I'm quite happy with the Shimanos right now.
