Beth, Mendocino is one of the nicest place to ride. You can start from Mendocino proper. Go out of town and go inland on Ukiah Comptche Road. Take that all the way to Comptche. Take Flynn Creek Road toward HWY 128. Come back to HWY 1 on HWY 128, then ride up the coast back up to Mendocino. $40 miles of road bike heaven--decent pavement, redwood forest, awesome coast view, rollers and moderate hills.
Another option is to start in Mendocino. Go up north on HWY 1 to Fort Bragg (8 miles one way). There is an abandoned rail road bridge that got converted into a pedestrian bridge. That is beginning of a 3-4 mile beach front trails that take you out of Fort Bragg. Once you are off the trail, continue on HWY 1 north. You can go as far as you can toward Westport. About 5 mile out of Fort Bragg there is a great beach to hang out. From Fort Bragg to Westport is 20 miles. I can post bikely route later.
