Today was our leisurely cycling group's Spring Ride. (However, I
forgot both my Flip video cam and my digital camera in my car and
didn't realize that I'd left it behind for about 20 minutes into the
ride...another rider took some pics, so I'll try to post something up
soon.)

For anyone that is remotely familiar with Central Iowa, we started in
Des Moines (at the Birdland Marina) and traveled north along the Des
Moines River to the Saylorville Dam. I was on my Protovelo and it was
a great chance to get out with the temperature around 70 F for most of
the ride. The others in our small group (five in total) were mostly on
steel bikes from the 70's and early 80's. (I've been somewhat
successful in cultivating a small group of individuals who enjoy a
tour rather than a race and have embraced the thought of a rolling
bicycle adventure/picnic.)

The route hugs the river pretty close and snakes through some woodland
area. For anyone that heard about Iowa's 150 year flood that is
apparently hitting every 15 years now (at least in the Des Moines
area), the route rolls through some of the hardest hit areas. It was
nice to discover that our Park and Rec group had been diligently
working to clean up the trail over the past 12 months.

The ride finished with a BBQ in Union Park, a park on Des Moines'
north side. All in all, a successful day and a great kickoff for many
more rides to come.
