I'm curious at the number of recommendations for tires in the 32 to 35 mm range in this thread. Most of the gravel I've ridden -- and it's not much; my off pavement is usually sand or hardpack -- on is far too loose and thick for tires like that, and Big Apples would be better. But there is a huge difference between even 50 mm BAs and 32 mm Paselas. I suppose there is gravel and then there's gravel? I was just reading a history of the early modern age, and read, again, that Britain had the world's best roads in the late 18th and early 19th century, and that the secret apparently was, no piece of stone more than an inch in any dimension. That said, 65 actual mm Big Apples will roll over anything.
