I have a Hilsen with a nice paint job and there is no comparison. The paint on the QB is not great advertising for Riv bikes. Funny, I have the opposite experience. My Quickbeam looks great and my Hilsen sucks. I had the Hilsen painted a custom color and the paint around the head tube lugs sucks. I did not expect a JB paint job but I at least expected it as nice as my "of the rack" green Rambouillet. I mentioned it to John at Rivendell and he told me to send him pictures. Hell, not being real computer literate, waiting 9 months for a Waterford built frame and Nobilet built fork (both very, very nice), and having already built up the frame, I decided I'd be pissed-off for a few years and then get a decent paint job.
