A friend and I just spent four days touring in the Adirondacks on our Atlantis's. We had 3 days of mixed weather and the final day was sunny and we ended up hiking in the High Peaks. The Adirondacks were beautiful, I had backpacked here several time but had not been here in about 20 years. The area has some tourist towns but many of the towns shown on the map are just cross roads with no services. Depending on where you plan to go it may be best to plan this as a backcountry trip and come prepared with all the food you need. Otherwise good research is needed to be sure you know where you can expect to find groceries, restaurants and lodging. If you like riding in remote and rugged country this is a great place and the scenery is some of the best in the North East.
This was the first time I had been loaded touring on the Atlantis. I have used it for day rides and did a 200k brevet on it earlier this year. While the bike was fine for the lighter rides it showed it's true colors on this ride and excelled as a loaded tourer. I was probably carrying 25 to 30lbs and the bike handled it without a problem. We encountered wet and rough roads so having the bike set up with 35mm tires and fenders was perfect. The drive train on the bike was Suntour 7spd Friction shifting with a 13-34 freewheel and 46/36/24 chainrings. This gear range was perfect for this trip.
