or at the stays?  I've seen many road bikes with extremely narrow spaces
behind the bottom bracket and brake bridge, especially bikes with
"hourglass" bent stays.

You must not know many women riders.  Yes, WSD stands for "Women
Specific Design."  It's what Trek calls its womens' bikes.
