I still ride my QB with the front shifting a lot. I like it. I don't
ride it for long rides, because I need gears, especially low ones. My
lowest with the shifting QB is 24 x 18.

In the Reader description, the QB only had two front rings operated by
a front derailleur with just one cog in the rear. The idea being
single-speed riding with two separate modes with ability to shift modes
while pedaling. After a while of use, I found that I would prefer three
front rings, so that's what I have now, and I like it better. I removed
the pants-guard ring.

I do have a derailer in the rear, and it has no cable bolt and no
shifting ability. It is only there to allow varying chainslack as I
shift in the front. The reason this rear derailer is relevant to you is
that this is a derailer that clamps onto the rear wheel axle, since
there is no hanger on the frame. So far, there has been no problem at
all with this derailer mount.
