As I understand it, the issues are roughly these:

- triples don't play well with brifters

- wide range cassettes can replicate the gear range of road triples

- for cyclocross, deciding when/where to shift the front and then double-shift the rear and then executing it on steep short hills and in the hurry and stress of competition can be challenging and difficult, compared to shifting the rear alone.
