If you need wide pedals, you should take a look at the VO Sabot pedals. http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/pedals/grand-cru-sabot-pedals.html At about 4 inches square, the platform is supremely comfortable, and at least in the year I've been using them on one bike, they seem durable and well-made. The rounded pins give very good traction but haven't had any negative impact on shoes or shins.
