Hi Daniel

Unfortunately I have spent only 5 days in Hokkaido, and 2 days in Shikoku,
so I cannot help you much.
There is an article about Hokkaido tour in Bicycle Quarterly 51. I haven't
read it, but I assume it will help you.

The following website has very good articles about Hokkaido tour:
http://takachi.no-ip.com/cycletouring/htindex.htm
as well as Shikoku tour:
http://takachi.no-ip.com/cycletouring/2001/shikokutour01/st01index.htm
http://takachi.no-ip.com/cycletouring/2011/shikoku11/shikoku11index.htm

Also, this website:
http://www7.plala.or.jp/tfi72/pass/#hokkaido
http://www7.plala.or.jp/tfi72/pass/#shikoku

The articles are written in Japanese, but you can get idea from maps and
photos.
I hope you enjoy your stay in Japan!

Takashi
