To add one more o this. If you friction shift you can make a modern xt derailer work despite the different cable pull. At least it works with my 8 speed shimano ultegra shifters. Shifts very well across the whole cassette. Main reason to go that route is to get a clutched derailer. So much quieter - especially on dirt.
