I commute year round on Marathons (Marathon Winter studded as appropriate) because they are what they are. Roads along my route have gone through cycles of transformation, from fair to really degraded and now partially freshly repaved. At one point I had to be more prepared for "off-road" type wheel and tire dangers than I would riding the GAP and C&O to Washington.
Since the majority of those urban commute miles are in the dark, I just don't risk a more susceptible tire. To this degree, I'll take the comparative deadness and weight of the Schwalbes in exchange for that part of my bike being closer to mindless. Among the various phases of a person's cycling, each has its own trade-offs. We've read threads about generator hubs/LED lights and the same sort of benefit/detriment balances that really are dependent upon you use and how you weigh those issues.
