Rode Marathon Supremes (700x32) on the tandem for a few hundred miles. They're like those dreams (nightmares) where you try to run but your feet only move like molasses. I switch to Panaracer Pasela (non-TourGuard, non-flatproof) which are much faster and cushier. And the Pasela is by no means a fast, cushy tire--it's just that I don't know of a tandem-rated 700x32 that is better.
For my solo bikes, I have been on Compass or Grand Bois tires for all of my long-distance (more than 400km) rides and Paselas for the short ones. I'd sure rather ride on comfortable, fast tires and risk slightly-more flats than ride all the time on sluggish tires with a horrible ride quality. And my experience is that I do not get significantly more flats on the non-flatproof tires than I used to when I rode flatproof tires all the time.
