Aside from not being quite so perturbed by it as James, I agree that 
"cockpit" applied to a bicycle has a whiff of affectation. Most cockpits in 
the modern sense are enclosed spaces, and in fact kind of claustrophobic to 
my mind. Leaving aside the archaic sailing terminology, cockpits also evoke 
a space bristling with technology--dials and meters and switches and knobs. 
Sure you can outfit your handlebars with a bunch of electronic doodads 
these days, but the bicycle to me is not something that has or needs a 
cockpit. (Please enjoy my opinion responsibly, and do not feel obligated to 
adopt it in any way, shape, or form, but kindly carry on with your own 
opinion, which I am happy to read!)
