Yes, it WILL be tough to find a really tall frame for 26" wheels. (What size are you looking for?) Maybe let go of the lugged requirement to make your search a little more realistic. There are perfectly fine tig'd frames out there. Also, realize that street-ified steel mountain bikes are the new rage so you may have a harder time finding what you want.
As for me, I agree that 26" is totally fine! Three of my four bikes take them. Good luck on your search.
