Ed, for what it's worth my Sam has a CX-70, 8 speed chain and XD-2 crank 
with 43/34 rings. I can ride the top 4 rear cogs in the 43 without any 
chain rub but it can require a slight bit of trimming from time to time. 
The 34 ring runs quietly through all 8 cogs. No doubt the Claris will work 
fine for you. 
Full disclosure: I have a new Claris as a spare.
