derailleur, I thought it would have enough throw to line up with the big 
ring properly.

Drew, 9 speed chain. I will try inching it up and see if that helps. Thanks 
for the suggestion.

flayer, using 9 sp Dura Ace on friction mode.

Garth, my thought exactly about the throw on an MTB derailleur. Using the 
no nonsense Dura Ace 9 speed shifters on friction mode and the standard top 
pull Deore XT 
derailleur.

Joe, this is a 9 speed, but I'm guessing the issue was that 8 speed chains 
are wider?
