I agree with Patrick.  I have used my Sam on trails around the bay area and it 
tends to feel similar to my rigid mtb days in the '80's with a little more bb 
drop.  Conway was selling a set of new Smart Sams for $60 
(https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/d6TmbLyGdkg).  
That's what I've been using for trails and they're really fun.  As a matter of 
fact, last time I was at Riv HQ, Will said that he had just been talking to 
Roman about how much he missed riding his Hillborne with Smart Sams.  It's a 
fun set up and $60 would be a cheap investment to try it out.  If you don't buy 
them, I might as a back up set since Riv doesn't carry them anymore.  The only 
problem with that scenario is that they take so long to wear out.
