More than the weight comment, I usually get the "how old is that
bike?" when I'm riding my custom Riv with downtube shifters. You know,
it's the downtube shifters that really throw them off. Anyway, I
always enjoy telling them how it's practically brand new.

A couple of weeks ago, under the influence of Salmonella, I did a full
disassembly of the bike. First time since I assembled it. I was
gobsmacked to find, written on the steerer tube, the weights of the
frame and fork, a date, and the initials of the Riv employee who
inspected and weighed it. The year ... 1997. Holy Shmoley - over 12
years old. Ancient in terms of plastic bikes, I suppose, but I still
think it's practically brand new, and let's face it, after I
reassemble it, it will be another 12 years before I tear it down
again. Where does the time go?

As an aside, it weighs only a few grams more than a Roadeo, which is
about 1/2 pound less than the Heron Road I disassembled last night.

road bikes are getting a little maintenance.
