I very intentionally never put one on my Hunqapillar when I got it five 
years ago. Before that I rode according to the computer. What a difference 
no "live" metrics makes! As you describe, very liberating. Riding by feel, 
keeping my effort aerobic (roughly 180 beats per minute less age), which 
I've done running for years so I have a very good feel for it, makes the 
ride far more enjoyable than my chronic cardio of years gone by. It's 
wondrous not riding to metrics!
