I think Philip has it right. The chainline was off and the chain was essentially trying to get in line with the chainring. Climbing flexed the frame, decreased the distance between the bb and cassette, and created some slack (less tension) in the chain. The chain shifted (helped by the shape of the teeth on the cassette) and POW! It is pretty neat to imagine it all happening.
