My mountain bike days were mostly pre-1995, with the first being a CyclePro "Sintesi" with Deore 6 speed; 48/238/28 X 14/28 was the rule. The next was ditto but 7. By 1995 the gearing had dropped to 46/36/24, with 22s cropping up, and 32 cogs available.
