I can't help with the frame mod idea too much, but I did convert my Quickbeam to an IGH 3-speed. I agree that the QB has a special ride quality that I can't quite explain. The word that keeps coming to my mind is "glide". With fenders and the 3-speed gearing, it serves as my city bike and stays in my office.
