I have one mounted on an older Atlantis but was able to mount directly to the 
mid fork eyelets. If I was mounting with struts, the strut eyelets would go to 
the fork braze-ons and then would attach to each mounting slot on the rack with 
the Nitto rack bolts. Like you said, this is a more expensive option. 

For what it’s worth, I commutes with the same rack attached with p clamps with 
a large basket for a few months without issue. If I were doing panniers plus 
basket, rough road riding and/or touring, I’d like a more rigid setup like 
struts or direct mounting.
