I don't know anything about continental divide singletrack, but I challenge the 
notion that it's not rideable. Why else would it exist? Or are these hiking 
trails? Or (motorized) dirt bike trails? In any case, if you pointed me up a 
steep, rocky climb and gave me the choice between 29+ and 27+ wheels, I'd take 
the bigger wheels any time. The increased traction and rollover capability 
cancel out any weight penalty in my opinion.
