I've seen a few of those kinds of set-ups... the issue is the lever body is not akin to riding in the 'hoods'. On the 29er forum on MTBR, if you weed through the "how much travel can i get on a bike crowd" there are interesting posts on Monstercross and drop bar 29ers who are kinda cousins to the country bike genre.
