Interesting. It turns out that the calculations yield numbers very
close to what I have been inflating the tires on my bikes with 32mm
Paselas for a while now. An item of curiosity: the referenced
article from BQ, upon which the calculator is based, has a paragraph
that credits Frank Berto for measuring the tire drops of various tire
sizes in order to come to his "15%" conclusions. Does anyone know if
this is more or less true across the board for all tires of a given
size (width) or if it is partial to the more "round" tires - maybe
even towards tubulars? My Paselas appear to have a very round cross
section, to which I credit their excellent handling. But I used to
ride a set of 28mm Avocet Cross II (not to be confused with cyclo-
cross) - that actually measured more like 26mm or 27mm when mounted -
and the bike's handling experience with them was much worse;
difficult, if not impossible under some circumstances, to ride without
hands on the bars. I blame this characteristic on the more
"elliptical" shape of that tire's cross section whereby a smaller area
seems to contact the road.

[by the way, if anyone wants these Avocets I'll ship 'em just for the
asking]
