I started out not cutting the legs, but on my bike it left the front
wheel six inches off the ground with the stand deployed, which wasn't
particularly stable. Here's one technique, a variation of the single-
leg approach:
Install the uncut stand. Grab a few 1x6s (or whatever boards you have
lying around) and stack them up under the rear wheel. (Assuming that's
the one that's on the ground.) The front wheel will go down. When you
get the front wheel down about where you want it, measure how tall
your stack of stuff is, and then cut a bit less than that amount off
the two legs of the kick-stand. I did mine in a couple steps, just to
be cautious about it, 'till I got it where it worked well. Empirical
method, rather than mathematical. :)
