Surefire method: don't cut. Mine worked fine uncut, even with large bb drop frames.
FWIW: for holding up heavy and assymetrical rear loads, I've found that a $10 Greenfield rear-mount stand works better than anything else including two-leggers, both Pletscher and Velo Orange.
