I can be shocking! But I had my blue Clem as my only Riv for a long time, and I had it set up as best I could with light parts and wheels and tires and still I was exhausted riding it at speed and up hills. The Platy solved that for me, and I had light parts on both and had Analog build both wheelsets.
I tried the Clem for a club ride and I’m not lying when I say it taxed me. My heart beat so fast with the work I was putting in that I was throwing PACs. Now, I don’t know your demographics but for a 5’6” 128 lb woman it was work to race that Clem around. There’s nothing lowly about a Clem and I wouldn’t call the bike slow, either. But it’s not a club racer by design, and I certainly couldn’t make it into one. I am shocked Leah....as someone who regularly takes a bike with extra weight and a non-ideal gear ranges on club rides I think its unfair to label the Clem as not suitable for the same. I (personally) would probably make changes to a Platy set up as such before using it for club rides but YES as we have seen it can be used for that. I stand by the fact that people just setup Clems differently and that leads to the whole "heavy and not as nimble" thought. Riv geometry is Riv geometry and there is nothing specific that makes the Platy majorly different other than how people treat them and adorn them. Personally I prefer the greater stepoverability of the Clem but I DO understand the reason why it gets labeled as lowly and slow. I just don't agree. Doug, Well, I can tell you in earnest! Now, you know I’m on your side about Clem-loving. I will never sell mine. But the Platy is more nimble and fits me like a glove. I race it around on club rides. But I can also haul a bunch of stuff with it. What can you not do with the Platy? Well, gravel rides aren’t ideal, I suppose. Also, I hardly ever see a Cheviot for sale. I think people tend to keep the Rivendell mixtes. I’ve wondered why, but that is a subject for another thread.
The Clem is also good at many things on that list, excluding club riding. That one time the Platy was in the shop and I took it to the club ride…I nearly died that day, astride my blue Clem…ah, memories.
What do you think, Justin? You’ve had a Chev and a Clem… L What is it about the Platypus that relegates the Clem to not quite good enough? I ask in jest. I'm loving my Clem and if I bought a Platy it would have to be Clem plus one. I hope you find one in trade Justin but like Leah said it seems folks don't move on from a Platypus often.

Like I said, I love my Clem but yes, I miss the Cheviot and am itching for something a little different. I rode Will's platypus when I was there last summer and really dug it. Seems like every two years I need to change it up ;-)

Leah I’ll do some digging and see if I can find you one, Justin. But I’m so curious - I know you loved that Clem and you used to have a Cheviot. Are you missing your old Chev? I have both bikes and I find the Platypus far superior to my Clem so I get it. I’ll get to looking…
