I also use an old 70's double front derailleur (SunTour Compe V) on my
49-45-28 TA triple and it works fine.  I think you can snag NOS on
ebay for well under $20.  NOTE:  my Compe V has reverse shifting...you
get used to it but if you use this with rapid rise rear derailleur you
might go insane.
