No, not in a UCI level event.  Again, it's just too fast.  not sure
why this controversial.  these folks ride through mud, sand, obstacles
faster than most people can ride on pavement - and at the highest
levels, the combination of pure speed and skills turns any
disadvantage - like having only one gear - into huge time deficits in
an hour long race.

No.  Not at all.  It's just that multispeeds are simply faster.  The
fastest sscx'er I know of is Marko LaLonde.  he won the SS
championship, but finished 51st in the pro field with riders on geared
bikes.  he now rides a geared bike in order to compete in that field.
