I keep my saddle bag on the saddle (where it works very well). For the front I have a Nitto Mini/Platrack combination rack with a Wald 139 (18x13x6 in) basket. What I love most about this basket is I the fact that I can just "toss" stuff in there on a whim...virtually anything... from a small/ medium duffel bag to a hat, gloves, bag of bagels, etc... It's so convenient. Plus there's that devilish inner voice inside of me that chuckles every time someone looks at my bike with genuine indifference (or mild disdain)... for they probably will never know the pure joy and fulfillment of such simple utility... "HA HA! Go ahead", I say.... "Just TRY to carry a dozen bagels in that lycra jersey... That will require four bagels in each pocket, by my count... I DON'T think you've got the stones to attempt it, DO YOU, Racer Boy???"...
