I'm not sure what part of the country you are in but I would fender that Roadeo
or take a fendered bike in January.

My frequent strategy for riding brevets in non-home territory was to find some
local to shadow or follow especially when it got dark. If you wait til later
wen dark approaches, you will be around similar speed riders.

I also had trouble reading cue sheets in the dark with bifocals. A light on
helmet caused tilt of head putting reading view too high for the magnifying
area. I ended up using a small pinch light on an elastic shoe string hanging
hanging around my neck. Most of the time it rode inside my jersey but was
easily retrieved when needed.
