I actually did this on a tour last year, although with duct-tape. I
found that while I wanted the odometer to track miles at the end of
the day in my log book, most of the time i didn't want to see it.
Not to mention the thing became annoying the first day b/c it was
reflecting sunlight into my eyes during mid-day hours.

I used a cateye wired model, which started going screwy probably due
to rain at 3800 miles in Jasper, AB and I replaced with a specialized
model that isn't made anymore from Freewheel Bike shop downtown. I
covered that one with a small patch of duct-tape too, and that one
lasted the rest of the trip.

I highy recommend the duct-tape & peek at the end of the day (or time
unit of choice) method.
