I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if the discrepancy 
between "Lumpkin" and "Rumpkin" was aimed to avoid legal issues that might 
inhere in LOTR copyright claims.  

Whatever the case may be, I think Rumpkin rings better to the ear.
