Chicago has a rough plan on the books for a paved trail that follows the
north and south branches of the Chicago River from the city limits to the
downtown area.

A small section along the north branch was completed a few years ago. The
path is on ground level except for when it crosses bridges, where it goes
underneath. Riding it is a joy, but ultimately frustrating. A non-stop,
relatively quiet path in a crowded city that ends way too soon.

There is currently no money to extend the path. Any talk of doing so is
immediately met with the vitrolic nay-sayers complaining about the
socialist bikers. A real pity.
