I bet that at least 50% of the people on this list who have toured didn't have anyone to show them the ropes the first time. Pick a route, pack some gear, and go. You'll find out what works and what doesn't work for you as you tour more. It's not like you're trekking to the north pole -- no polar bears to fend off, no ice floes to crawl over. If you don't like it, turn around and go home.
