Hi Erl, I will just add that I too commute on a Surly LHT. Before
committing to the Albatross bars you may want to take a closer look at the
mustache bars. You will get the same hand position as the Alba bar out on
the ends, but you also get many other useful (and aggressive) hand
positions all the way up to the stem as well. I heartily endorse this setup
with the Shimano bar ends for city commuting! Yes you can fly through the
gears, up and down just as quickly as grip shifters, and no they wont
break. Mine have been rocking trouble free for over five years of near
daily use with many bike spills. They have a few scratches on the plastic
end caps but never a malfunction. Going with cloth bar wrap (shellacked)
gives a natural transition from bar to shifter so you can even comfortably
rest your palms on the ends for the most upright position. If you're a
v-brake guy like I am, Tektro makes a linear pull road lever that works
perfectly on the mustache as well.

I have a second bike with the Albatross bar and it's OK. I like it fine for
cruising down to the corner store for a six-pack but it's not as
comfortable as the mustache for distances similar to your commute.

Cheers to new bars!
